Discover Borneo Big Five:

Borneo Pygmy Elephant: Small Asian elephant that grows up to 2.5 meters long and lives in subtropical and tropical climates in Borneo Malaysia and Indonesia. The sanctuary is found in Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, covering an area of approximately 12 square kilometres. Today, there are fewer than 1500 Borneo Pygmy Elephants in the wild.

Proboscis Monkey: Massive primate endemic to the island of Borneo. It is named after the long, dangling nose present in males and spends most of its time in the trees near mangrove forests or bushlands. It is also called the long-nosed monkey and domestically as the bekantan. The proboscis monkey is an arboreal Old World monkey with an unusually large nose, a reddish-brown skin colour, and a long tail. It is endemic to the southeast Asian island of Borneo and is found mostly in mangrove forests and on the coastal areas of the island

Orangutans: One of the main attractions of the Kinabatangan River, along with Borneo pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, and hornbills. Visitors can witness these amazing animals in their natural environment by taking boat trips or staying at eco-lodges along the river. The orangutan at Kinabatangan is a great example of how people and wildlife can co-exist peacefully in a biodiverse landscape.

Hornbills : There are eight species of hornbills that can be found along the river, including the rhinoceros hornbill, the helmeted hornbill, the Asian black hornbill, the oriental-pied hornbill, the bushy-crested hornbill, the wreathed hornbill, the white-crowned hornbill, and the wrinkled hornbill. Hornbills play an important role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers and pollinators. They feed on fruits, insects, small animals, and even durian seeds. Visitors can spot these magnificent birds by taking boat trips or staying at eco-lodges along the river. Hornbills are a symbol of beauty and diversity in Kinabatangan.

Crocodile: Kinabatangan crocodile is a term used to refer to the saltwater crocodiles that inhabit the Kinabatangan River, the longest river in Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. The saltwater crocodile is the largest and most dangerous of all crocodiles and can grow up to 6 meters long and weigh over 1,000 kilograms. The Kinabatangan River is home to a rich biodiversity of wildlife, including orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, and hornbills, but also poses a threat to humans and animals alike due to the presence of crocodiles. Visitors are advised not to swim in the river or get too close to the water’s edge, and to follow the safety guidelines of their guides and lodges.
