Orangutan Sepilok is a sanctuary for injured, orphaned or rescued orangutans who are trained how to survive in the forest.
It is located near the town of Sandakan, Sabah, on the island of Borneo, Malaysia. Orangutan Sepilok was established in 1964 as the first orangutan rehabilitation centre in the world and covers an area of 43 square kilometres. It is home to more than 60 orangutans who live freely in the reserve and are supplemented by daily feedings.
Visitors can watch the orangutans from a platform during feeding times or visit the outdoor nursery where young orangutans learn to climb and socialize. Orangutan Sepilok also provides medical care and education for other wildlife species such as sun bears, gibbons and elephants.
